Piagetian Adaptation Meets Image Schemas: The Jean System
نویسندگان
چکیده
Jean is a model of early cognitive development based loosely on Piaget’s theory of sensori-motor and pre-operational thought [1]. Like an infant, Jean repeatedly executes schemas, gradually extending its schemas to accommodate new experiences. Jean’s environment is a simulated “playpen” in which Jean and other objects move about and interact. Jean’s cognitive development depends on several integrated functions: a simple perceptual system, an action-selection system, a motivational system, a long-term memory, and learning methods. This paper provides an overview of Jean’s architecture and schemas, and it focuses on how Jean learns schemas and transfers them to new situations.

The Jean System
Jean is a computational account of several aspects of cognitive development, specifically, a kind of Piagetian schema-driven learning. Jean’s schemas amalgamate Piagetian sensorimotor schemas with Image Schemas and with Dynamic Maps. These schemas are implemented in our Image Schema Language. Using our Experimental State Splitting algorithm, Jean learns by composing schemas into gists and by di...
متن کاملMeaningfulness of Religious Language in the Light of Conceptual Metaphorical Use of Image Schema: A Cognitive Semantic Approach
According to modern religious studies, religions are rooted in certain metaphorical representations, so they are metaphorical in nature. This article aims to show, first, how conceptual metaphors employ image schemas to make our language meaningful, and then to assert that image-schematic structure of religious expressions, by which religious metaphors conceptualize abstract meanings, is the ba...

متن کاملEffect of Using Image-Schemas on Learning L2 Prepositions and Enhancing Learner Autonomy: A Dynamic System Theory and Cognitive Linguistics-Inspired Approach
This study investigated the effect of applying the dynamic system theory (DST) and cognitive linguistics (CL) insights into grammar instruction on EFL learners’ learning of English prepositions and learner autonomy. Sixty Iranian EFL learners at the lower-intermediate level of language proficiency were randomly assigned to 1 experimental and 1 control group. The 2 groups filled out an autonomy ...
متن کاملThe Relationship of Perfectionism, Early Maladaptive Schemas, and Attachment Styles with Body Image Concern through the Moderating Role of Self-Esteem in Cosmetic Surgery Applicants
Background: Psychological elements could have effective roles on applications for cosmetic surgery and also on their precognition and satisfaction with surgery. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of perfectionism, early maladaptive schemas, and attachment styles with body image concern through the moderating role of self-esteem in cosmetic surgery applicants. Methods: It ...
